Assignment #4: What's a Computer File?

So what is a computer file anyway?

In this assignment you'll explore some things about computer files.

I'll give each of you a question to answer about computer files. Write your answer on a piece of paper or on the computer. Don't write just a few words -- I'm looking for as much information as you can find. Use a web search engine like Google to research your question.

You may work in a group of two or three people depending on the size of the class.

In the last ten minutes you'll present your results to the class.

A big part of the grade on your web projects will be how well you write.

I need to find out how well you can write a short essay. You need to find out how I will grade your writing.

The assignment is worth 35 points. 15 points are for grammar, spelling and format. 20 points are for content (is what you write clear and convincing?).

    This gets you ready to make web pages

  2. Make a simple page with a list and a link
    This is a lot like the last assignment, but using Dreamweaver instead of raw HTML

  3. Add an image

Assignment #13: Color Theory
Due March 6

You will have a quiz later in the week that will include these terms:

Do these three activities:

  1. View this tutorial slide show about basic color theory.

  2. Apply what you've learned by playing with this interactive color tool. There are a lot of buttons to try. If you find a combination you really like, you can keep it by clicking on URL of this scheme and adding it to your favorites.

  3. Finally, spend some time with this detailed tutorial about color. It's focused on print media (newspapers, magazines) but it is very useful to help understand the effects and use of color theory in design.

Assignment #14: Essay about yourself
Due March 9

Write a short essay about yourself with information that will help you get ideas for designing your personal web site. You should be able to put many of your words directly onto your web site.

Write about what is important in your life, what you like to do in your spare time, the kinds of media you like (movies, music, etc.) or anything that has to do with you. Include interesting details and say why you like those things or why they are important.

The essay should be at least 175 words long. Use Microsoft Word and double space. To find out how long your essay is, go to the File menu, choose Properties, and click on Statistics.

Take a look at this essay about myself for an example. It's 232 words long.

Assignment #16: High School Website Reviews
Due March 11

The purpose of this assignment is to begin considering what makes a quality web site.

  1. You need to know the right words for evaluating web sites.

    Click on these links to see what some professional web site designers say about
  2. Review some high school web sites

    Right click on this form, choose Save Target As, and copy it to your desktop. Rename the file and change John Doe to your name.

Assignment #17: Layout for Personal Web Site
Due March 16

You need to know what your web site is going to look like before you start making it. Otherwise, you might wind up with something as ugly as my own home page. Take a look at this layout for it. Notice all the boxes labels "links". There isn't any overall plan that makes sense.

Contrast that with the nice looking web page I made for the Blue Jay Cafe based on this paper layout. Having a plan really helps!

For this assignment, you'll make:

Mr. Levine will check off your layout but you'll keep it to make your web site.

Assignment #18: Personal Web Site
Due April 3

This is your first real project in this class.

You'll make a web site that shows information and pictures about yourself. Your pages can be about almost anything that is about you are that you're interested in.

Because you need to say where you got each photo from, you must keep track of all of your sources. Make a Microsoft Word document to hold the web addresses of every source you use. Every time you download a file you should copy the URL of the web site into this document. Use this information later to get sources when you actually use the photos.

To get ready for the Artifact Project, you will complete a short worksheet:

  1. Right click on this link and choose Save Target As
  2. Save the file to your My Documents folder.
  3. After the file is saved, choose Open and edit the file in Microsoft Word.
  4. When you're done, exit Word.
  5. Do not use Word to save the file to the outbox. Copy the file to the Outbox using the standard method.
