Assignment: Computer Vocabulary #1
Write a Word document in which you use your own words to define the terms below. Use the format described in the assignment. Use the Internet to help define the terms.
Save your document in your “My Documents” folder because you’ll be adding more definitions to it in the next few weeks.
Due: October 18, 2005
Send your document to me using NetMeeting
Name the document using your name and the assignment name (e.g. “John Smith Computer Vocabulary #1”)
Points: 5
For this assignment you will create a Word document that defines some basic computer terms. I’m looking for fairly short definitions (one or two sentences). Use the following format:
Digitools and Infotech
<first name> <last name>
<long month name> <date>, <long year>
Period <period>
Assignment: Computer Vocabulary #1
<term>
<indented definition>
<term>
<indented definition>
The parts of the format that are in angle bracket <> are places where you put in the words that apply to you. For example, <first name> is your first name. Computer scientists use this method to show formats. See the sample document at the bottom of this assignment.
To indent the definition, use the button. This will
indent every line of the definition. To remove the indent, use
.
Do not capitalize the terms unless they are proper names (such as Internet) or abbreviations (such as CPU).
Use the Internet to find explanations for the terms. You should be able to find web pages that have lists of computer terms. A good strategy is to Google “computer definitions” or “computer terms”.
Use the quotation marks as part of your Google search string – they tell Google that you want documents that contain the exact string, not the documents that contain the word “computer” and the word “definitions”.
The terms you’ll define (in your own words) are:
hardware
software
network
BIOS
operating system
application
hyperlink
Internet
intranet
World Wide Web
cursor
caret
Your assignment should look something like this (but with more definitions):
